Season Preview: Clayton County 14U Baseball League

The Clayton County Baseball League is one of the more competitive leagues in Metro Atlanta; here’s a preview of the 2016 season.

The 2016 CCBBL Season gets into full swing this weekend with a buzz and excitement  like never before.

Six teams will fight for the Clayton County Baseball League 14U Championship:

  • Morrow Lake City Braves
  • Jonesboro Red Sox (promoted)
  • Union City Eagles Blue (promoted)
  • Jonesboro Yankees
  • Panhandle Reds
  • Union City Eagles Black (new)

Coach Jones of Union City Eagles Blue says, “Six teams in the 14U division is a testament to growth and improvements of baseball in south Metro Atlanta.”

Last year in the 12U division, the Jonesboro Red Sox and Union City Blue sparked up a heated rivalry which consisted of 5 contests all of which were decided by 2 runs or less; 3 games decided in the last at bat. This rivalry continued all the way into the GRPA State Tournament in Cordele, GA where the two teams faced off in the quarter finals for their 5th and final match-up. Union City ended up winning that game to take a 3 games to 2 season advantage.

Coach Jones continues, “We know we have a bulls-eye on our back as the 2015 CCBBL 12U champions. I’ve Spoken to Coach Kevin (of the Jonesboro Red Sox) several times this off season, and we’re both just ready to start playing baseball.”

Ironically, the rivalry continues as UC Blue and the JB Red Sox square off on opening day.

The Morrow Lake City Braves have promoted multiple players from the CCBBL 12U Runners-up, the Southside Brothers, to round out an already strong lineup of 14U veterans.

“The MLC Braves are a tough team”, says Coach Jones. “They can pitch, run the bases well, have mentally tough veterans, and they can really rake…that team just kills the baseball.”

The veteran lineups of the divsion belong to the Panhandle Reds and UC Eagles Black. UC Eagles Black control baseball games with plus pitching and a lineup mixture of rookies and tournament/travel ball veterans. The PH Reds have several of the league’s most talented players and will lean on their experience to challenge for the title.

The wild card team is the JB Yankees. They have quietly put together a roster a very good bats and have improved their pitching rotation with a young lefty who will give inexperienced hitters of league the fits.

The wide open horse race that is the 2016 CCBBL 14U Division begins this Saturday, March 19th.
